MENTAL ILLNESS: 16 years since the disappearance of Richey James Edwards of the Manic Street Preachers

Today is the 16th anniversary of the disappearance of Richey James Edwards, the guitarist and lyricist of the Manic Street Preachers.  His car was found abandoned 2 weeks later in a service station near the old Severn Bridge.  He was never found and officially declared dead 3 years ago.

It is traumatic for every family and friend of people who go missing or are found to have taken their own life.

Ritchie had suffered from the torment of mental illness for a while before his disappearance which manifested itself with self harm.

In the last 2 years I have been aware of 5 people who have taken their own lives in my community.  The tragedy of mental illness can affect anyone of us, old or young, rich or poor.  These people had so much to give, and people wanted to help, yet somehow it wasn’t enough.  It is good to think of those less fortunate than ourselves and the lives that have been lost. We should never forget.

I remember Ritchie today through his lyrics, and of others I know.  The lyrics below were written by Ritchie and used by the Manic’s on their album Journal for Plague Lovers.  The last track on the album is beautiful –    William’s Last Words

Isn’t it lovely, when the dawn brings the dew?
I’ll be watching over you
isn’t it lovely, when the dawn brings the dew?
I’ll be watching over you

Goodnight my sweetheart
Until we leave tonight
Hold me in your arms
Wish me some luck as you
wave goodbye to me

You’re the best friends I ever had
Goodnight, sleep tight
Goodnight, God bless
Goodnight, nos da
I’ll try my best

Isn’t it lovely, when the dawn brings the dew?
I’ll be watching over you
isn’t it lovely, when the dawn brings the dew
I’ll be watching over you

I will be waiting all my cares are for you
Dreams they leave and die
I’m just gonna close my eyes,
think about my family
And shed a little tear

Goodnight, sleep tight
Goodnight, God bless
Goodnight, nos da,
I’ll try my best

Isn’t it lovely, when the dawn brings the dew?
I’ll be watching over you
isn’t it lovely, when the dawn brings the dew?
I’ll be watching over you

Leave me, go Jesus
I love you, yeah I love you
Just let me go
I even love the devil
For yes he did me harm
To keep me any longer
‘Cos I’m really tired
I’d love to go to sleep and wake up happy
Yeah I’m really tired
I’d love to go to sleep and wake up happy,
Wake up happy.
